Jing cocked his head to the side in question, and so I re-read the note. “Well,” I thought aloud, trying to compare airship maps of the area I could remember to what we had seen on our way down, “Newton Brook shouldn’t be terribly far from here, maybe an hour or two east if we can find the right road. Do you think this Kissin’ Cordelia lives in a big brown barn there? Perhaps it’s near these two rivers?”

“She’s from Manhattan, Norwood,” Jing answered acerbically, and I hoped Ms. Teston didn’t expect us to make our way from the Canadian countryside to that far away metropolis. “She’s travelled through Toronto a handful of times, but I don’t see her living in a big brown barn in some cow town for any period of time.” Despite our confusion at the note, Ms. Teston clearly intended us to locate the big brown barn at Newton Brook, regardless of its residents there.

We mucked through a couple of cow fields bordered by woods before finally finding a wagon-rutted road that led to Newton Brook. At one point we were walking through a fairly wooded area, though the canopy afforded enough space above that we could observe the sun making its ponderous flight westward to our backs. The light suddenly winked out around us, as if a particularly opaque cloud had tumbled into place, although a noise caught my attention and I pulled Jing into the thicket off road.

I could hear the distant though unmistakable hum as it grew steadily louder above. The massive shadow spread across our entire view of the sky like a blot of ink spilt on paper. By its size and silhouette, I discerned it was one of the Royal Fleet warships, and I had no doubt in my mind it was the Princess Louise flying so low to the ground the lens system could scan the forest floor with relative ease.

Jing whispered, unnecessarily, “I realize they believe I... murdered some ambassador, but they seem to be sending the whole Navy after me.” We paused as the passing airship’s noise faded back into that of a peaceful forest. “Why all the bother?”

A reasonable question and I could offer no insight, so we continued along down the wooded road in apprehensive silence.
